Melody & Muse 🎶
Brad Arthur - Artist, Producer, Creator
Hello there!
It's Brad Arthur here, and I’m excited to be back with the second issue of Melody & Muse! This newsletter is my way of sharing the songs, quotes, videos, and insights that have inspired me each month, along with answering your questions and keeping you updated on everything happening in my creative world.
Over the past month, I’ve been deep in music creation, leaning into new projects and growing through it all—both as an artist and as a person. I have been developing the next YouTube video following on from the '9 minutes 10 years' video and I have an exciting giveaway opportunity that will go along with that to celebrate passing the 25k and 30k subscriber milestones this last few weeks. Stay tuned to the YouTube channel to see that. It's a real joy to be sharing my creative process and insights with you all. The artistic and creative pursuit is a wild journey, full of learning curves and breakthroughs, and I’m grateful for every step. More than anything, I’m excited to be connecting with even more like-minded people—those who share the common goal of making music and living a meaningful, inquisitive life. Seeing this community grow has been incredible, and I can’t wait to keep building it together.
There’s a lot I’m eager to share with you this month, so let’s dive right in! 🚀🎶
The freshness that this track has really spoke to me. Zac has a great feel to his vocal tone and how it blends so well with the alt rock/indie pop production. It's a part of the album 'for the hell of it' which I will gladly be workign my way through over the next while.
Loving what my man Dominic has done here! the blend of his spacious ambient vocals along with the retro synth style of production makes for such a tasty, melancholic soundscape. It's a really masterful blend of purity and distortion.
I've loved music by The Caracal Project for quite a while now and this song always gets my hyped. I love how unique the style and sound is, it has roots in Drum & Bass along with garage but it stands in a lane of it's own thanks to the character and style that The Caracal Project weaves into it all the way through. It leans into a minimal style of production that makes it feel punchy and intimate at the same time.
My Favourite Quotes 💬
Ray Bradbury
“Life is trying things to see what works”
You don't find out by thinking, you find out by doing. What works for some won't work in the same way or won't work at all for others. The only way you figure out your thing is by trying a bunch of things to find out what happens. If you try something and you really want it to work but it doesn't, don't worry. When you find your thing you will be glad that all the other things you tried didn't take off. Everything you try can give you insight, regardless of the outcome.
Emmerson
“In the minds of geniuses we find our own neglected thoughts''
I heard this just recently in a conversation about understanding your mind, feelings and patterns. The point seems to be that in general geniuses don't have thoughts that are categorically different from everyone, they just really pay attention to them. We all go through similar experiences and have similar thoughts. How we relate to those thoughts, and the actions we take because of them, goes a long way in determining their value. Think of Isaac Newton and the apple falling from the tree. That had been seen before, people probably always wondered why things fall like that but he leant into the thought deeply enough to come out the other side with an explanation of gravity. The same goes for feelings. The best songs often speak to a feeling that we've all had in some way. The artist expresses it eloquently, or puts two and two together in a way that feels mind blowing. It was something you feel like you already knew, they just put it into words.
Thomas Henry Huxley “For every man the world is as fresh as it was at the first day, and as full of untold novelties for him, who has eyes to see them”
Life remains wondrous for those open to it. The future is unknowable, often bringing unexpected people, art, and experiences that shift our reality in ways we couldn’t predict. I often underestimate just how cool the experiences in my future will be. One of my favourite things is discovering new music that completely changes my experience of the world, you didn't know it was coming and when it does it's an awesome thing to experience. 'Past you' had no idea that when you were 'x' years old you'd discover your new favourite band, song or person. We rely on the past and our imagination to picture what’s ahead, yet reality consistently surprises us—often in ways more beautiful and intriguing than we envisioned.
A perfect example is when two people from different parts of my life meet. I had never imagined their worlds overlapping, yet when they do, new connections spark, adding unexpected colour to life. Given the vast, unpredictable nature of the world, curiosity serves me very often as the best mindset—one that seeks experience, understanding, and awareness. With a curious mind, we remain open to what we cannot plan, allowing life to unfold in ways richer than we ever imagined.
I released light my way just recently, if you haven't seen or heard it, here is the music video, I hope you enjoy it. Creating this was a real whirlwind and all came together with just me, Finn and my brother Osh. Our aim was to capture a selection of shots that resonated with the song. What we ended up with was a collection of the most beautiful forms of light in the world around me. I don't remember making a conscious decision to capture different forms of light but it was brought to my awareness after releasing the video that all of the shots were portraying some form of unique light and it made it feel even more special. It goes to show that not all of your creativity has to be consciously driven. You are collaborating with your sub conscious and with the broader world around you. Songs and videos often have a way of taking on a life form of their own if you don't hold the steering wheel too tightly. Some of my favourite parts of songs are from something unplanned or unintentional. All you have to do is show up with the intention to create and the trust that whatever is meant to come together will.
There are other-worldly worlds within this world. it's easy to get fully absorbed into your own little frame of mind and be totally unaware of just how vastly different and beautiful this world can be, often times right under your nose too. I love to imagine actually being an animal that lives in a place like this. Their entire frame of mind and existence is vastly different to ours. It can be calming or terrifying depending on how you look at it but in any scenario it feels inspiring. Writing from a perspective like this can be a really powerful and abstract way to create. I also learned recently that whales and dolphins only ever sleep with one side of their brain. It's called Uni-hemispheric, slow wave sleep (USWS) which allows them to stay partially alert to predators and their environment, and come up to breathe every 5-8 minutes whilst the other half of their mind is in a slow wave state of rest. This would be pretty handy to be honest. Then we could keep cooking up music all night and get a full nights rest too.
This is courage, bravery and love in pure form. The depth, maturity and understanding that exudes from this song and video is unreal. you can tell it comes right from the heart of James, sitting beside his actual father who was battling a terminal illness. They both came from a military background where the 'done thing' is to be strong, stoic and mentally tough which just makes this even more raw and authentic. The notion of passing on the duty of 'chasing monsters away' is such a powerful, relatable and moving one. There are countless 'Monsters' that will show up in life and you have no choice but to face them head on. There is a reason why some of our favourite stories revolve around monsters that must be faced and overcome. (The Hobbit, Lord of The Rings, Harry Potter) Usually they withhold a treasure and if you have the courage to tackle them who knows what wonders may lie on the other side. The characters we love most are not the ones without flaws or weakness but the ones who, despite their shortcomings, give their best in the face of adversity and fight with their heart. Having someone to look up to, that is leading the way through the perilous walks of life is such a beautiful gift. Eventually there comes a moment in time where you will be the one that leads the way. If there is someone you look up to, who you love deeply, tell them. Share that with them and let the act of doing so be something you cherish the memory of.
This video and track just keeps getting better every time I watch it. It's based on a true story. It feels like such an epic reminder to not take things too seriously. The creativity and humour in it is top tier. Try and watch this without smiling or headbanging, impossible if you ask me. There is an awesome behind the scenes video showing how they made it all come together which is well worth a watch too.
Question of The Month ⁉️
How do you tell if something is a gut feeling or not?
A gut feeling is quick and instinctive—it doesn’t require rationalization or overthinking. It doesn’t stem from agitation but from a place of inner stillness. Malcolm Gladwell’s Blink explores this idea, explaining how our subconscious mind often registers truths before our rational mind can catch up. It's a really fascinating book and well worth a read.
Listening to your gut is a skill, one that improves with practice. At first, the signal may be faint, but it tends to be persistent and often unexplainable. A great way to strengthen it is to make a game of it—ask yourself how something or someone makes you feel and answer instantly, before logic intervenes.
That said, intuition isn’t infallible. It doesn’t guarantee the "right" answer, and sometimes, you simply need more information before making a decision. You are free to override your gut feeling at any time but it is likely there for a reason. I often say 'it's a hell yes or it's a no' and this can be a really helpful way to gauge whether something aligns with your values and feels like the right thing to do. Of course sometimes you aren't ready to make a decision yet and naturally feel unsure about something. In that scenario you have to call upon your curiosity. Keep exploring, discovering more about whatever you are leaning into and continue listening to what your gut says as you learn more.
Ultimately, intuition is a tool—not a rule. It serves to guide, warn, or encourage you, helping you move in a direction that feels true to your values and vision. The more you trust and refine it, the clearer its voice becomes.
